GILAD COHEN (Host & Producer)

Gilad is an artist, human rights advocate and founder of JAYU, a charity that uses art to share human rights stories. Gilad has been actively involved in the human rights scene since 2006. Feeling the need to raise more awareness in his own community, Gilad launched JAYU in 2012, using art as the main vehicle. Gilad has been invited to speak on human rights in media and several platforms including CTV, CBC, The Globe and Mail, Al Jazeera America, and the 19th session of the UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva in 2012. In 2015, he was selected as a Rothschild Fellow through The University of Cambridge in the UK, as well as a fellow with the Toronto Arts Council Leaders Lab in 2017.

SIMONA RAMKISSON (Host) 
Simona Ramkisson is a community development professional who is actively working to ensure community voices and insights are at the center of community program design and not the afterthought. As a advocate of open practice and program design, Simona is currently working on a province-wide digital literacy project focused on ensuring marginalized and underrepresented communities are included in the changing innovation economy. Her current obsession includes working with communities of colour to understand their digital rights and to better equip vulnerable peoples with the tools and know-how to better engage and participate online.

BRANDON FRAGOMENI (Producer & Editor)

Brandon has had his hand in several industries over the past few years.  Brandon spent time in the United Kingdom completing a Masters in Public Administration, focusing his research on Canada‚Äôs Indigenous peoples and public policy.  Brandon has also spent time working in the fitness and health industry, which lead to the creation of Plates Podcast, a podcast about the culture of food, fitness and health, in which Brandon is the co-host.  Brandon has been involved with non-profits and grassroots organizations for over a decade and now works in international development.

ALEX CASTELLANI (Producer & Editor)

Alex Castellani has always believed in the transformative power of story telling from a young age.  Vacillating between passions and interests over the years, he has since compounded harnessed skills into a multi-location cafe and bar in Toronto where he uses sensory experience and education to tell stories about people and lands around the world.  From a young age inheriting his fathers 35mm camera, Alex has had a deep passion for photography and broadcasting.  He spent his young adult years mastering audio and setting up audio productions for various functions and currently produces another podcast, PLATES, focusing on food and fitness culture. With an post-secondary educational background in ethics and a business focused on transparency and supply chain equity across beverage categories, Alex is thrilled to be part of the team at The Hum.

RON MA (Associate Producer)
Ron is a student at the University of Toronto, majoring in Cinema Studies and Urban Studies. As a lifelong cinephile, he encountered the field of arts administration in university and has been pursuing it ever since. He has supported arts organizations of different sizes and goals, such as Trinity Square Video, Cinema Studies Student Union at the University of Toronto, and now JAYU. In his spare time, he writes for Top 10 Films, a website that celebrates film through a wide variety of lists and reviews.

AMAR WALA (Host)

With his debut feature The Secret Trial 5 (2014), Amar Wala established himself as a daring new voice in Canadian cinema. A graduate of York University's acclaimed Film program, he believes deeply in cinema's ability to create awareness and facilitate social change. Passionate about both documentary and narrative film, Wala's dramatic work has also garnered high praise at home and abroad. Cameron Bailey, Director of TIFF, named Amar one of Toronto's Top Ten Filmmakers in 2008, for his short film The Good Son. The Secret Trial 5 received the 2014 Magnus Isacsson Award at RIDM, as well as a Jury mention in the Emerging Filmmaker category at Hot Docs. The film would also be named one of Now Magazine's Top Ten Films of 2014.

KATY SWAILES (Producer & Editor)

Katy is a filmmaker and audio producer based in Toronto. She is the writer/producer of the feature documentary film Voices of Silence, about domestic violence in Bangladesh, and associate producer/story editor of The Ravenite, a documentary film about the Gambino crime family's social club in 1980s New York. By day she is the associate producer of Writers & Company, a weekly literary program on CBC Radio One and SiriusXM Radio.
